Lois won second prize in the Asham award, for women writers in the UK, in 2008. Her winning story Mrs Laidlaw’s Event Horizon was published by Bloomsbury in the collection Is This What You Want?. It also appears on, along with an article about writing, and has been used on creative writing courses in the United States. Her story Lichen, about Lockerbie during the second world war and enemy planes, appears in New Writing Scotland No. 26, Bucket of Frogs. She has also had poetry published in the Virago anthology New Poets in 1993.
